not this stuff, but cigarettes (best [smoking in a car] image I could find) This weekend I am going to transition over to the e-cigarette, then quit from those. Been a long time coming. Been smoking 20 years and it is time. I have quit for a year, and 5 months, and another time for 4 months, all cold turkey. Just getting too old for this shit. Wish me luck Oppo. Best of all it means more money to spend on cars! Wooooo!

Good luck man, a relative of mine quit cold turkey 15 years ago and never went back, it can be done.

I quit 8 years ago ... cigarettes not that stuff.

I quit when I set a dreadlock on fire lighting up a cigarette in the car. Then I quit again for my girlfriend's (now wife) birthday present because I was broke. That one stuck. Not smoking while driving was the hardest part.

Good luck! However, I might suggest not using e-cigarettes, as (at least in Canada) there isn't much regulation for them, and we have no idea about the long term effects on them. Search around to see if there's another option that suits you. Like instead of smoking when you get an urge, smoke some tires. It probably costs about the same.

Good luck! Just beware of the dreaded double smoking effect where people just start smoking both types. The tobacco companies are giving those e-cigarettes out like candy these days. They have to have an angle..... Quitting those might even be harder than quitting normal cigarettes because you can smoke in more places and are easier to justify as being healthy. Good luck though.

Good luck. Also quit once for 2 years, not sure why I started up again. Currently me and the girl have been completely smoke free for 4 days now!!! No cravings anymore, breath better, and I get to keep more of my paycheck (car shopping now!). FYI- were doing it cold turkey. Its' all in the head.

I quit early this summer. Just went cold turkey. I've had friends quit cigs only to replace their addiction with something else like ecigs or gum.

Good luck.

Good luck! It's smart not to end up like my grandfather, who quit at 65. Too little, too late.

I'll never touch a cigarette after watching his struggles, but I've smoked e-cigs from time to time because I think I'm cool.

Your kids (can't remember if you have any) will thank you. My dad was a closet smoker (my mom and I knew) for 20 some years.

The day after Peter Jennings (remember him?) died of lung cancer in 2005 I called my dad and told him it was time to quit. I had no intention of burying my dad when he was only 50 or 60 something.

Tears were shed and it wasn't easy for him to quit (it was a stress relief mechanism for him) but here we are almost ten years later.

Glad every day that I made him do it.

Good luck and stay strong my man!

Good luck dude! Just did the same thing this summer... Worked well for me! (I've had a nearly identical smoking history to you, going on 20 years, several longish-quits...) remember to stick to one or the other or you'll end up doubling up on the nicotine... I did about a month of the "high nicotine" e-cigs (I like the BLU , they have a familiar feel -unlike the large-capacity ones that feel like smoking a small bong- and good flavours), then moved to a "low nicotine" cartridge and then I started forgetting them places, leaving them in the car, or at friend's houses... and now It's been about 4 months since I smoked (e-cig or otherwise). So far so good!

Good on you! I work at a gas station, meaning about half of my job involves selling tobacco. It's really depressing when I have to sell a carton to an 18-year-old, and then my next customer is a 30-year-old woman who looks 90 and can only speak through a hole in her neck. It's so much better to quit now than to end up like that. Best of luck to you, but I'm sure you'll be able to do it!

By the way, I probably don't know what I'm talking about since I don't smoke, but I think it could help if instead of finishing your last pack, you just flush the rest of them. Symbolism, or something.

Good Luck Man!
After 30 years of Cowboy Killers, I just woke up on mothers day 2013 and threw what was left of my pack away. I was sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.
I went and bought the patch for the first two months, and it helped.
It's been a year and a half and the other day I had a cigar while I was out Grilling some steaks.
I got about halfway through that and tossed it in the fire. My appreciation for those went out the window too!

As someone who quit about 3.5 years ago, I have to say congratulations.

I also have some unsolicited advice.

1. You'll have cravings. At first there will be a bunch of them. They last for 10-15 minutes at the most so if you're able to push through them, do that — without your e-cig. The first two weeks are the worst, but they taper off quickly after that.

2. Get some gum or something else to occupy your mouth for a while

3. Remember the benefits. Your clothes, hair, car, and breath will all smell much better. You'll have more money. The average smoker goes through about a pack a day — and even here in tobacco country they're $4 for the cheap ones. That's $120/month.

4. The only negative I've found is that black coffee doesn't taste as good. That's it.

5. Because this is a physical addiction, remember that it's not just willpower. Keep yourself engaged with your support network. Use all the tools you have.

I got you by a decade man. You will be fine. Luckily I (ironically for this group) commute and ride bicycles to the tune of about 3,500+ miles a year so I don't get too far out of shape. But I hear you on the desk thing. Desk jockeying is hard.

Oh man, I got a touchy back, a recurring hip pointer and a ankle with bone chips floating around in it at age 46, which is why I don't race anymore. My body can really only tolerate race level efforts maybe 3-5 times a season before something gives out.

Growing old ain't for sissies, man.

Word. I have a general rule that unless I have something to do that requires a car surrounding work, if I feel good enough to go to work, I feel good enough to ride to work. It keeps me from getting too far out of shape. As I am sure you know, getting it back takes longer as we age. And it hurts SO bad to be real outta shape.

No no no no no no no no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Disclaimer - I quit over 3 yrs ago after approx 78 previously failed attempts. My views on the subject are harsh, unpopular, unsolicited, and long winded, but effective. YMMV.)

You don't need luck, and you don't need e-cigs, but you do need to come to terms with the root of your problem. You aren't a smoker, or a person with a bad habit. YOU ARE ADDICTED TO NICOTINE. The first thing you need to do is come to terms with this fact. This part is not optional, nor should it be understated. It will be the first of many difficult things you experience in the process, because you will need to admit personal weakness in letting a substance control you for so long. Switching to e-cigs merely changes your nicotine delivery method and nothing else.

Once you come to terms with this, you'll need to change your mindset. NOTHING is a bigger priority to you than breaking your nicotine addiction. Not your job, not your friends, not your relationships. Think that's a bit extreme? Of course. But it's necessary. Think back to why you failed at quitting previously - Probably because something or some one or some series of events bothered you or stressed you out or whatever. You used that as an out so that you had an excuse to go back to smoking. In order for you to remain quit, there can be no more outs.

Next, eliminate everything that reminds you of smoking. Have a butt jar on the back porch? A smoking jacket? All of it must go. Make it a symbolic gesture if needed with a ritual and candles, or just toss the stuff, whatever. It all needs to go. You'll also need to change your daily habits. Where do you buy your cigarettes now? Don't go there any more. If you get them at the same place that you drive past on the way to work, take a different route. If it's the same place you get gas, go somewhere else and pay at the pump.

Tell everybody you can think of that you are quit, but say it with conviction. Not "Oh, I think I'm gonna try to quit again...." but more like "FUCK YEAH I finally quit for good after 20 yrs." This will give you accountability.

Prepare yourself for the unending pile of suck that is withdrawal. You are going to be a seriously grouchy bastard for at least a week or two, maybe more. But that's ok, because it will get better. Take your new found freedom (and $$$) and do something nice with it to reward yourself - Take your lady out to a nice dinner. Go buy some new clothes, that are fresh and don't stink like smoke. Take your car and get it professionally detailed (one of the good $200 ones, not a cheap $50 wash-n-vaccuum type). Reward yourself often for small milestones, it will go a long way.

Lastly, pay close attention to how you feel for the first few days and weeks, embrace it, and never forget how shitty the experience is. It's going to be terrible, but worth it. If you find yourself craving a smoke, think about just how shitty the early parts in the quitting process are, and how you don't want to to thru that again. If you find that doesn't bother you, start calling people that you told you quit and tell them that you're planning on caving.

Got all of that? Good. Now don't wait to quit. Do it NOW. Walk over to the trash can closest to you, and throw away your lighter, and your cigarretes. NOW!!!!! You'll be thankful, because in two days (when you were supposed to quit), you'll have been quit for two days already. You can do it!
